Cire Trudon is a French candlemaker and the oldest wax-producing factory worldwide. Founded in 1643, it was the provider of the royal court of King Louis XIV, as well as most of the great churches of France
The Paris-based company has gained a serious cult following of A-listers and designers, including fashion maestro Giambattista Valli, who collaborated with the brand on candles that evoke memories of the Amalfi Coast. Its first stateside boutique resides in New York City, tucked away in the charming Nolita neighborhood. Trudon's keen attention to craft and detail, manually poured wax, precise formulas, and gorgeous handmade vessels maintain the brand as a premier and one-of-a-kind candlemaker.

Visit product page →This little-known copy of Marie-Antoinette of Austria is attributed to one of the Brachard brothers, either the eldest, Jean-Charles-Nicolas or the youngest, Jean-Nicolas-Alexandre. This object is an idealized portrait of the queen instead of the evocation of a sovereign at the height of her power. The head is slightly turned to the right; the shoulders are covered with a swath of fabric for a natural effect; she is wearing a crown decorated with a fleur-delis and a row of pearls. As one of the most famous and controversial women in French History, Marie-Antoinette was the object of many artistic representations. Many valuable pieces disappeared during the French Revolution. Fortunately, some copies have survived the upheavals of time.13

Visit product page →As soon as the Consulate period started, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) became aware of the importance of having his portrait shown to the French people. Thus, he initiated the edification of his own legend. All the supports were used, from sculptures to snuff boxes and fans. The multiplicity of objects bearing the effigy of the Emperor or representing imperial symbols constituted an extraordinary tool of propaganda for the Napoleonic legend. During the Restoration, however, Bonapartists were forced to hide and prepare their revenge, spreading more and more seditious objects. The Emperor’s death in 1821 made him less dangerous in the eyes of Royalists and copies representing his main actions once again multiplied. The Second Empire (1852) made the imperial legend official with commissions of sculptures installed in public squares and paintings exhibited in museums. Although the Second Empire reestablished the official propaganda, the fall of the regime in 1870 put an end to the celebration of Napoleon for 20 years. Nationalist fervor rose again in the 1890s and since then, he has not ceased to be a heroic figure.

He is considered the «Sculptor of the Enlightenment» and fixed in stone the portraits of important figures of the time, including the Tsarina Catherine the Great of Russia, Diderot, Voltaire and Rousseau. As the most brilliant portraitist of the 18th century, Houdon maintained all his life a strong interest in the theme of childhood. The portraits of the Brongniart’s children made in 1777 express with strength and tenderness this passion for a subject that never became old-fashioned.
